This set of “Gli Scacchi” side tables represents a playful and functional expression of 1970s Italian Modern design by renowned architect Mario Bellini for C&B Italia / B&B Italia. Named after the Italian word for “the chess game,” these modular pieces are crafted from self-skinning polyurethane, a durable and slightly soft plastic material that was a technical innovation in furniture production at the time. Originally created to complement the iconic Camaleonda seating system, the sculptural forms draw inspiration from chess pieces and can function interchangeably as side tables or casual seating, offering flexibility in contemporary interiors. Their bold silhouette and tactile surface capture the spirit of playful modularity that defines Bellini’s work and mid-century Italian design. Crafted in Italy in the 1970s, these pieces are in good condition with wear consistent with age and use, maintaining both their structural integrity and aesthetic charm. Whether grouped together or used individually, these tables bring a distinctive blend of form, function, and design heritage to curated living spaces.
