An exceptional Zig Zag chair after the iconic 1934 design by Gerrit Rietveld, one of the most influential figures in Dutch modernism and the De Stijl movement. Crafted in solid ash by a skilled cabinetmaker during the 1980s, this example faithfully captures the revolutionary simplicity and structural ingenuity of Rietveld’s original concept. Constructed from four wooden planes joined end to end through precise dovetail connections, the chair creates the illusion of a floating cantilever while maintaining remarkable strength and stability. Its striking Z-shaped profile transformed conventional ideas of furniture design and remains one of the most recognisable silhouettes in twentieth century design history. Originally conceived as both a sculptural object and a practical chair, the Zig Zag perfectly embodies the De Stijl ideals of geometric purity, functionality and visual clarity. The warm ash wood grain adds natural character and craftsmanship to the minimalist form, making it equally suited as a dining chair, accent chair or collectible design piece. Housed in the permanent design collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Zig Zag chair remains one of the most celebrated achievements of modern furniture design and a lasting symbol of Dutch innovation.
