Designed by George J. Sowden in the mid-1980s and produced in 1986 for the Italian magazine La Donna in collaboration with Memphis Milano, this rare wall mirror is a highly collectible example of postmodern Italian design. Created as a commemorative piece and never released for public sale, it survives today in very limited numbers. The mirror is constructed from lacquered wood and features a striking perforated black metal insert at its center, adding depth, texture, and contrast. Its composition of arcs, rectangles, and vertical elements creates a subtly anthropomorphic silhouette that reflects the playful and symbolic language of the Memphis movement. This particular example is especially significant as it is hand-signed and dated on the reverse “George J. Sowden, 1986,” confirming provenance and enhancing its desirability for collectors. Produced as a special project for La Donna magazine, the mirror embodies the experimental spirit that defined Memphis Milano and Sowden’s contribution to 1980s design. A museum-quality piece, ideal for serious collectors, galleries, or design-focused interiors seeking an authentic and rare postmodern statement.
