Designed in 1964 by Walter Papst for Wilkhahn, the Model 1000 garden bench, also known as the Bärenbank, is a distinctive example of post-war organic design translated into outdoor furniture. Produced in Germany, the bench is executed in fiberglass, a material chosen for its durability and resistance to weather conditions, making it suitable for year-round outdoor use. The sculptural form reflects the soft, organic language characteristic of the period, while maintaining a strong and functional presence. Measuring approximately 230 cm in width, 75 cm in depth, and 75 cm in height, the bench offers generous seating and a bold architectural profile. The piece retains its original manufacturer’s sticker on the reverse, along with the Wilkhahn logo embossed into the fiberglass, confirming authenticity. Offered in vintage condition, it shows signs of use and age consistent with outdoor placement, resulting in a charming patina that enhances its character. A rare and iconic design, this Bärenbank is both a functional garden bench and a collectible statement piece of 1960s German design.
