Iconic Chartres wall sconce designed by Willem van Oyen for RAAK Amsterdam and introduced in 1964, regarded as one of the most celebrated achievements of Dutch mid century modern lighting design. Inspired by the stained glass windows of the historic Chartres Cathedral in France, the fixture combines hand fused colored glass fragments with a minimalist metal framework, resulting in a striking Brutalist composition that functions equally as lighting and wall art. Each example was individually handcrafted in Willem van Oyen’s renowned BEVO Glas workshop, making every piece unique through subtle variations in color, texture, and pattern. When illuminated, the textured glass creates a captivating interplay of light and color, transforming the surrounding space with a warm and atmospheric glow. Highly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts, the Chartres remains one of RAAK’s most iconic and collectible designs. Suitable for direct wall installation or use with a cable and switch, this sculptural luminaire is a timeless statement piece for sophisticated interiors.
