This iconic Butterfly Stool, model S-0521, designed by Sori Yanagi in 1954 and manufactured by Tendo Mokko in Japan during the 1980s–1990s, exemplifies Japanese Mid-Century Modern design. Crafted from rosewood-veneered moulded plywood, its two gracefully curved shells form a sculptural butterfly silhouette, connected by a brass stretcher. Combining organic forms with innovative craftsmanship, this celebrated design reflects the elegance of postwar Japanese modernism. The stool retains its original Tendo manufacturer label inside. In good vintage condition, it displays light scratches, surface marks, rubbing along the lower edges and small areas of veneer loss or chipping around the curved seat edges. The brass fittings show natural patina, while the plywood structure remains intact.
