The Argyle chair, designed in 1897 by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for the Argyle Street Tearoom in Glasgow, is presented here in a rare Cassina ‘I Maestri’ edition from 1973, no longer in production. Crafted from ebonised ash, it features Mackintosh’s first use of the iconic oval backrest motif, combined with vertical panels and slender rods that form a striking architectural silhouette. The seat retains its original blue-black crine (horsehair) fabric, while crossbars and softly curved edges beneath add subtle refinement to the geometric structure. Bearing Cassina’s branding, serial number 803, and Mackintosh’s signature, this meticulously crafted piece is based on original drawings from the University of Glasgow collection. In very good condition with minimal wear, it stands as both a functional design and a historic symbol of Mackintosh’s innovative vision.
