Set of eight Model 121 dining chairs, designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa and produced by the Italian manufacturer Cassina in 1967. They feature black saddle leather upholstery and a lacquered pale wood structure (ash).
Remarkable condition for the age. Chairs have been well cared for. Some impressions into the saddle leather as to be expected, eg. keys in pocket, studs on jeans etc. Ask about our re-pigmentation service if you want "as new". Otherwise, the current completely original condition is about as good as it gets.
Afra and Tobia Scarpa designed the 121 chair in 1965. A sketch from 1943 made by Carlo Scarpa (Tobia’s father) inspired its shape. Two thin plywood “petals” compose the seat and the backrest. They are upholstered in black saddle leather. The back has cut in the lower part, required due to a reinforcement that reacts to torsion stress, which is strongest at this point. Furthermore, the basis is a solid wood double trestle. Eight screws link it to the seat and the backrest.
Model 121 was studied as a dining chair matching the 778 extensible table. Afra (1937-2011) & Tobia (1935-) Scarpa both studied at the Venice Institute of Architecture. Tobia first worked for the Italian glass manufacturer Venini. From 1960 on, the couple opened their own design office. Their work includes architecture and everyday items like furniture and clothing. Tobia and Afra designed for numerous major Italian and international companies like Flos, Gavina, B&B Italia, Cassina, Knoll International, and many interior projects for numerous companies worldwide.
