This wall mounted Mid Century coat hanger, model Gronda, was designed by Luciano Bertoncini for Elco in Italy in 1970. Composed of five modular elements, the design reflects Bertoncini’s rational and user oriented approach, where form and function are seamlessly integrated. Each module features a walnut wood front paired with an ABS resin back, creating a refined contrast between natural material and industrial innovation. A distinctive feature of the Gronda model is its discreet push mechanism. The upper section of each module is fully integrated into the geometric form and, when pressed inward, transforms into a functional hook for hanging garments. This clever solution maintains a clean and minimal appearance when not in use, while offering practical functionality. Designed for wall mounting, this coat hanger is both sculptural and highly practical, making it an iconic example of Mid Century Italian design defined by clarity, material balance, and functional ingenuity.
