An exceptional pair of PJ-SI-48-A X-Leg lounge chairs designed by Pierre Jeanneret for Chandigarh, India, circa 1960. Defined by their distinctive solid teak X-shaped frames, the crossing structural elements form both the legs and support for the seat and armrests, creating the powerful architectural silhouette associated with Jeanneret’s Chandigarh furniture. Low proportions and gently reclined backrests provide a relaxed seating position, while newly upholstered black pony cowhide across the seats, backs and padded armrests creates a dramatic contrast with the warm, richly grained teak. The pair has important provenance from Panjab University, Kasturba Gandhi Hall, Girls’ Hostel No. 4, with chair numbers 054 and 033, and the model is documented in specialist literature on Chandigarh furniture. Presented in very good original condition, with newly upholstered pony cowhide.
