An exceptionally rare pair of “Fireside” chairs, model PJ-SI-36-A, by Pierre Jeanneret, created for Chandigarh, India, and dating from 1966. Each chair features a sculptural solid teak frame with Jeanneret’s characteristic compass-style double side-leg construction, reinforced by a horizontal crosspiece. The low proportions and tilted backrest give the design a powerful architectural presence while retaining a relaxed seating position. The seat and back have been professionally restored in white cowhide, creating a refined contrast with the richly patinated teak. Particularly significant is their documented provenance from the Punjab University Zoology Department in Chandigarh, linking the pair directly to Jeanneret’s celebrated furniture programme for the modernist city developed alongside Le Corbusier. The model is documented in specialist literature on Chandigarh furniture. Presented in very good original condition with an attractive patina and newly upholstered cowhide.
