A distinctive hand-blown glass vase by Sem Schanzer, created during the 1990s as part of the Antwerp-based artists’ collective L’Anverre. The sculptural vessel is defined by an unusual angular, leaning silhouette, departing from the conventional vertical vase form, while a pronounced spiral wraps around the body and emphasizes its sense of movement. The glass transitions through a rich red gradient, from lighter translucent tones to a deeper, more intense red, giving the surface additional depth as it interacts with light. Although several examples of this design were produced using the same traditional hand-blown technique, variations inherent to the process ensure that each vase is unique in shape and coloration. Schanzer, a self-taught multidisciplinary artist and founder of L’Anverre in Antwerp in 1986, worked across glass, sculpture and installation. This expressive vase reflects his experimental approach to form and material. Signed by the artist, it is a collectible example of late 20th-century Belgian studio glass.
