An iconic Paimio Model 41 lounge chair designed by Alvar Aalto in 1931–32 for the Paimio Sanatorium in Finland, one of the defining works of Finnish Modernist design. This example is believed to date from the late 1980s and features the model’s distinctive bent laminated birch frame with a white lacquered plywood seat and backrest. The continuous sculptural shell follows the body in a relaxed position, while the elegantly curved birch supports demonstrate Aalto’s pioneering experimentation with bent wood as an alternative to tubular steel. Produced by Artek, the Paimio chair remains celebrated for its combination of functionality, organic form and architectural clarity. Presented in solid, good vintage condition, with age-related signs of use including visible wear to the seat.
