A distinctive Mille Pat carafe designed by Sem Schanzer for the Antwerp artists’ collective L’Anverre, combining traditional glassmaking with a playful and highly sculptural form. Hand-blown in rich blue glass, the carafe incorporates the bullicante technique, trapping numerous controlled air bubbles within the glass to create depth, texture and a dynamic interaction with light. Its most characteristic feature is the series of sculptural glass spikes projecting from the exterior, which allow the vessel to rest in different positions and transform its silhouette depending on how it is displayed. This unconventional functionality reflects the experimental spirit of L’Anverre, blurring the boundaries between functional glassware, sculpture and collectible design. Sem Schanzer, also known as Sem de L’Anverre, founded the interdisciplinary collective in Antwerp in 1986 and developed a multidisciplinary practice encompassing glass, sculpture and installation. A playful and expressive example of Belgian studio glass, the Mille Pat works equally well as a functional carafe or standalone sculptural object.
