This exceptional low table was designed in the 1970s by Dom Hans van der Laan in the Netherlands and is a rare example of his furniture work executed on an unusually large scale. Compared to most known low tables by van der Laan, this version stands out for its generous dimensions, as well as for its grey green stained finish, a less common colour choice from a palette of only five nature inspired tones. The table is constructed from solid wood and features distinctive round copper nails used to cover the wooden planks, another uncommon detail that enhances its sculptural and architectural character. This piece was created as part of the furniture collection for Roosenberg Abbey, conceived as a Gesamtkunstwerk in which architecture, furniture, and proportion form a unified whole. Van der Laan designed nine pieces for this collection, each respecting his theory of the plastic number, a proportional system defining the relationship between depth, width, and length. A Dutch monk from a family of architects, Dom Hans van der Laan devoted his life to the study of form, proportion, and spatial harmony, laying the foundations of the Bossche School together with his brother Nico. The table is in very good condition, showing light wear and patina consistent with age. As a fully handmade object in solid wood, it displays some natural shrinkage and warping, which adds to the authenticity and character of this remarkable architectural design piece.
