A striking large UFO vase created by Sem Schanzer for the Antwerp artists’ collective L’Anverre during the 1990s. Hand-blown in rich purple glass, the vase embodies the playful and experimental character for which L’Anverre became known. Its distinctive flattened disc-shaped body evokes a flying saucer, while the vessel balances on a spherical glass base that allows it to rotate and shift position, reinforcing the illusion of a spacecraft in motion. This interactive element transforms the vase from a functional vessel into a dynamic sculptural object. Produced as part of a broader series of UFO vases in different colours and sizes, each hand-blown example retains individual variations inherent to the artisanal production process. Sem Schanzer, also known as Sem de L’Anverre, founded the interdisciplinary collective in Antwerp in 1986 and worked across glass, sculpture and installation. Signed by the artist, this large purple example is an expressive and collectible piece of late 20th-century Belgian studio glass.
