An elegant Functionalist sideboard and bookcase, likely produced in Czechoslovakia during the 1930s, combining practical storage with the geometric clarity of early Modernist design. The composition pairs black-lacquered wood with bent chrome-plated tubular metal, whose curved supports provide both structural and decorative definition. The lower cabinet features sliding glass doors with precision-cut finger pulls, while the open upper section provides additional display and storage space. A contrasting red-stained plinth base introduces warmth to the otherwise restrained palette and reinforces the piece’s sculptural presence. The interplay of tubular chrome, glass and lacquered surfaces reflects the material experimentation associated with Central European Functionalism of the interwar period. The sideboard’s surfaces have been refinished, preserving its distinctive period character while refreshing its appearance.
