This dining table, designed by Gio Ponti in the early 1940s, stands as an example of Italian modern design and masterful craftsmanship. Veneered in richly toned Italian walnut, the rectangular top radiates warmth and sophistication, while showcasing the refined balance of proportion and detail that defines Ponti’s work.
A distinctive fluted motif runs elegantly along the tabletop edges and continues through the four tapered legs, introducing texture and a subtle sense of movement. This sculptural detailing creates a refined contrast between the table’s strong architectural presence and the lightness of its silhouette.
The historical significance of this design extends beyond furniture. The same fluted pattern appeared in Ponti’s interior work for the rectorate building at the University of Padua, as well as in the bespoke furnishings created for Villa La Quiete dell’Alpino in Stresa, home of Domus publisher Gianni Mazzocchi. Accompanied by a certificate from the Gio Ponti Institute.
