This early edition Cobra 629 table lamp was designed in 1968 by Elio Martinelli for Martinelli Luce and is a landmark of Italian modern lighting. Conceived as a redesign of the earlier Serpente model, the Cobra embodies Martinelli’s philosophy of pure geometric forms combined with movement and function. The lamp is composed of two resin-moulded bodies connected by an internal steel structure that allows a smooth 360° rotation, while an aluminium interior reflector enhances light control. In its closed position, the design can be inscribed within a perfect sphere, conveying clarity and simplicity; when rotated, it transforms dynamically, evoking the poised movement of a cobra. This interplay between static geometry and kinetic expression defines the lamp’s sculptural character. The manufacturer’s mark is present underneath the base, confirming authenticity. A highly collectible and iconic piece of Italian design that balances innovation, elegance, and expressive form.
