A distinctive Candied Sugar vase created by Sem Schanzer for the Antwerp artists’ collective L’Anverre during the 1990s. Hand-blown in a playful combination of crystal-clear and green glass, the vase is defined by its fluid, swirling form, reminiscent of dripping honey or molten sugar. The contrasting types and colours of glass interact with the light to produce shifting green hues and varying degrees of transparency, reinforcing the lively character of the design. The piece reflects L’Anverre’s fascination with childhood imagery, vibrant colour and unconventional forms, transforming a functional vessel into an expressive sculptural object. Although several Candied Sugar vases were created using the same artisanal technique, the nature of hand-blown glass ensures that each example is unique in its form and coloration. Sem Schanzer, also known as Sem de L’Anverre, founded the interdisciplinary collective in Antwerp in 1986 and developed a diverse practice spanning glass, sculpture and installation. Signed by the artist, this vase is a collectible example of late 20th-century Belgian studio glass.
