A sculptural hand-carved hardwood bench dating from the 1940s, shaped from a single substantial slab of dark wood and defined by an organic, distinctly wabi-sabi aesthetic. Rather than following strict geometric proportions, the seat preserves the natural irregularities of the timber, with gently tapering ends, asymmetrical edges and expressive grain that emphasizes the material’s original character. Four hand-turned splayed legs extend outward beneath the seat and are secured with visible flush-set dowel joints, highlighting the traditional craftsmanship behind the construction. The hardwood displays deep brown tones with subtle reddish undertones, natural variations and irregularities that make the bench unique. Generously proportioned for two people, it can also function as a low occasional table, hallway bench, bedside piece or sculptural display plinth. Its primitive construction and expressive natural form make it particularly suited to Organic Modern, Rustic Modern, Brutalist and wabi-sabi interiors.
