Eero Saarinen's Tulip chair, designed in 1955-56 as part of his Pedestal Collection for Knoll, stands as a true modernist icon. Saarinen sought to eliminate the visual clutter of multiple legs on traditional furniture, opting for a single pedestal base that gives the chair a clean, sculptural appearance. Originally envisioned to be made of one material, technological limitations led to the use of a fiberglass seat and an aluminum base, painted to look like a seamless piece.

The design, which evokes the shapes of both a flower and a wineglass, became revolutionary for its organic form and simplicity. Its futuristic look, often associated with the Space Age, made it a quintessential piece of mid-century modern design.

This example from the 1970s, designed by Eero Saarinen for Knoll International, remains in very good condition. The back of one chair shows some minor wear and a few small imperfections, adding to its vintage character (see photos). The chairs feature new striking red pillows, enhancing their bold aesthetic.
