A distinctive 20th-century sculptural stoneware object inspired by the organic form of a chestnut emerging from its burr. Hand-modelled in gres, the piece explores the contrast between rough natural textures and smooth polished surfaces through an expressive combination of ceramic techniques. The outer husk is covered in a matte, textured glaze in earthy beige and cream tones, with prominent individually modelled spikes giving the sculpture a tactile, almost Brutalist character. At the centre, a deep dark high-gloss glaze recreates the smooth surface of the chestnut itself, creating a dramatic visual contrast with the raw exterior. The interplay of texture, finish and organic form transforms a familiar element from nature into a compelling piece of decorative sculpture. Equally suited to a collection of studio ceramics or displayed independently as an objet d’art, the work brings together Organic Modern, Brutalist and nature-inspired design in a highly tactile composition.
