A quick search for "mercatino dell'antiquariato" or "mercato delle pulci" near your location should guide you. Do keep in mind that many of these markets are closed during August due to the holiday season. Closer to home, auctions, thrift stores, and specialized vintage shops are also regular stops on my itinerary, as are various online platforms, including my favourite, Curiouz.
The Art of the Hunt: Insider Tips for Spotting Gems
My primary tip for online searching is to keep it straightforward. Use the simplest, broadest terms you can think of. The less specific your search query, the higher your chances of uncovering a hidden gem that hasn't yet been recognized by seasoned experts. It requires some persistence, but the satisfaction of making a unique find is truly rewarding.
Understanding Value and Avoiding Pitfalls
The value of a vintage piece is determined by several factors: its designer, rarity, condition, and the materials used. Just like in fashion, current trends also play a significant role in influencing the desirability and price of certain styles or items.
A common pitfall for new collectors is purchasing counterfeit items at the price of authentic design pieces. Unfortunately, this occurs frequently, especially in places like Italy. Even a brand sticker isn't always a guarantee of authenticity. It's crucial to inspect the piece closely: pay attention to details like the screws, the finish, and the overall construction. And here's a vital piece of advice: if a seller is hesitant or states they aren't "100% sure" about a product's authenticity, it's often a strong indicator that it's not genuine.
A reputable seller will always confidently stand behind the authenticity of their items. Always trust your instincts; if something seems too good to be true, it likely is.
My Most Memorable Discovery
I vividly recall one of my most remarkable finds shortly after launching Wintage. I had
arranged to pick up a mirror from a home via Marktplaats (a Dutch online marketplace). It turned out that the architect who owned the house had recently passed away, and his residence was filled with exquisite design pieces.
Among these treasures, I managed to acquire a Pastoe cabinet from the Japanese series for a mere €20. It was an astonishing moment for me to find such a valuable piece for my fledgling business! This experience truly affirmed the immense potential within the world of vintage design.

My best advice for new collectors is to research what genuinely appeals to you and which design style resonates most deeply. Whether it's Mid-century Modern, Art Deco, or Space Age – immerse yourself in it!
