Developed during the brief 1932–34 partnership between the two Dutch manufacturers, the chair belongs to an innovative series of demountable tubular steel furniture conceived for efficient disassembly and transport. Its clean geometric frame and functional construction capture the progressive spirit of Dutch Modernism and Functionalism in the early 1930s. HOPMI’s experiments with demountable tubular furniture also form an interesting chapter in Dutch design history, with Gerrit Rietveld later creating a chair for the company in 1934. This armchair remains remarkably authentic, retaining its original paint and chrome finish. The frame displays an attractive age-related patina, while the chrome remains stable and has not been repainted or otherwise altered.
