A thin steel framework covered with sprayed resin, which gives a Fiberglass look. The translucent resin gives a beautiful soft light effect. A great example of mid-century modern lighting design.

The ‘cocoon’ technology has been developed by the German Friedel Wauer, who discovered a mechanical way to cover a steel mesh by imitating the ''self-coiling'' of the silkworm.

Many designers as George Nelson, Pier & Achille Castiglione and Tobia Scarpa were fascinated by the light effect and the properties of the cocooning material.

The ceiling light comes with three sockets. Nice state, light corrosion effects at the outside, not really visible when the lamp is placed.

Diameter 55cm, height 14cm

The Cocoon Ceiling Lamp, designed by Friedel Wauer for Goldkant Leuchten in the 1960s, stands as a true icon of mid-century modern lighting. Its thin steel frame is coated in a sprayed resin that mimics fiberglass, resulting in a soft, translucent glow that defines the lamp’s unique aesthetic. This “cocoon” technique, inspired by the natural spinning of silkworms, was pioneered by Wauer and soon captured the imagination of renowned designers like George Nelson, Pier and Achille Castiglioni, and Tobia Scarpa. With a generous diameter of 55 cm and a low profile of 14 cm, the lamp houses three light sockets, offering ample and diffused illumination. While some light exterior corrosion is visible upon close inspection, it remains nearly imperceptible once installed. This piece not only exemplifies innovative material use but also encapsulates the spirit of post-war design experimentation, making it a timeless addition to any interior.
